One of he most powerful creativity
and self improvement exercises you can
do is called Discovery Writing.
Discovery Writing is "channeling"
your unconscious mind to give you ideas
you never knew you had!
To get you into the "groove" of doing
Discovery Writing it's best to do a warm-up
exercises.
The first warm-up exercise is to get
a piece of paper and write the numbers
1 to 20 down the left hand side of the paper.
Then, at the top of the paper write:
"List 20 things that fly."
Then AS FAST AS YOU CAN (WITH NO
"THOUGHT-TIME") write down 20 things that
come to mind.
To yield best results your pen should
hardly leave the paper.
And this is important:
You are not looking for the "right"
answers.
Instead, whatever springs up from your
unconscious is the right answer.
So, if you think of the Empire State
Building for one of your 20 things that fly -
write down Empire State Building.
The "goal" of the exercise is not to
come up with the right answers - the only
"goal" (if you can even call it that) is
to purge your mind of 20 thoughts related
(or unrelated!) to the topic.
That is the warm-up exercise.
It is designed to get you into the
groove of just going with whatever thought
bubbles up from your unconscious related to
a topic that has very little meaning or
ramifications for you.
The exercise itself should not take
more than a minute or two.
And, again, you CANNOT get the wrong answer.
However ridiculous or silly the thought
that comes up related to the topic -
write it down on your list.
OK, now that you have some experience
of Discovery Writing on a meaningless topic,
you are ready to direct the Discovery Writing
exercise to something more meaningful to you.
Like, say, Hypnosis.
You could get a blank piece of paper.
Write 1 to 20 down the left hand side
of the paper.
And, at the top of that paper, write:
"List 20 Ways I COULD Get Better At
Hypnosis Today"
Then, AS FAST AS YOU CAN (WITH NO JUDGEMENT)
write down whatever immediately comes to mind.
NOTE: It's important on this Discovery
Writing exercise to tell yourself in advance
that you are not necessarily going to do any
of the things on your list. You MAY end up
doing one or more of the ideas your unconscious
puts in your thoughts -- but that is NOT the
purpose of doing the Discovery Writing
exercise.
So - give yourself permission in advance
to write down ridiculous, childish, silly,
nonsensical things on your list.
Get your thinking, reasoning mind out of
the way -- and open the floodgates for your
unconscious to run wild.
Again, the Discovery Writing exercise
should only take you a minute or two.
And there is no other purpose to doing
Discovery Writing than the Discovery Writing
itself.
But you know what?
If you do Discovery Writing everyday
(it only takes a minute or two!) you will
soon find yourself advancing in hypnosis
(or whatever else you direct Discovery Writing
to) at astonishing speed without feeling like
you putting any particular conscious effort
into it.
Try it! The results can be very dynamic.
Like I said at the outset of this email,
Discovery Writing is one of the best
creativity and self-improvement exercises
you can do. And the results you end up
getting from it (even though you are not
focused on attaining any results) will
really surprise you!
